In his new autobiographical book, A New Way to Be Human: 7 Spiritual Pathways to Becoming Fully Alive (New Page Books), Robert V. Taylor, who would in time become one of the highest-ranking, openly gay Episcopal priests, tells a story that begins with spiritual awakening—and calling—in South Africa. That calling was very tied to the struggles there for justice, equality, and the end of apartheid. These stories and more make for a vivid, telling chronicle. "This book will become well thumbed as you return to it time and time again to be reminded of what is essential to your journey: that God longs for us to be people of love and compassion." – Desmond Tutu. Thursday evening's talk at Seattle First Baptist Church, is presented as a part of the ongoing Seattle Spiritual Synthesis series. Tonight's talk is focused on the ways in which we can talk about politics and religion with friends, families, co-workers with differing views. Free Admission. Seattle First Baptist Church is located at 1111 Harvard Avenue.

Co-presented with Image Journal. A writer we remember from when she lived and taught her—and had her debut novel published—Debra Dean makes this welcome return from too-distant Florida to read from her newly released third novel, The Mirrored World (Harper). Set in a Russia she also vividly evoked in The Madonnas of Leningrad, The Mirrored World fictionally tells the life of St. Xenia, a major, 18th-century historical figure. "Love affairs, rivalries, intrigues, prophecy, crossdressing, madness, sorrow, poverty—The Mirrored World is a litany of both the homely and the miraculous. Intimate and richly appointed, Debra Dean's Imperial St. Petersburg is as sumptuous and enchanted as the Winter Palace." - Stewart O'Nan. "With evocative, rich prose and deep emotional resonance, Debra Dean delivers a compelling and captivating story that touches the soul." - Garth Stein.
