As we prepare for this year’s World Book Night U.S., we’re glad to invite one and all to attend a special kickoff event featuring beloved Washington authors Jamie Ford and Maria Semple, (both of whom are the authors of books chosen for WBN distribution this year)—and World Book Night givers, who are encouraged to share stories of their WBN participation. Jamie Ford, author of WBN selection, The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet (Ballantine), is also the author of Songs of Willow Frost (out in a new paperback edition from Ballantine). Maria Semple is the author of WBN selection, Where’d You Go, Bernadette (Little, Brown). World Book Night U.S. is an ambitious campaign to give a half million free, specially-printed paperbacks to light or non-readers across America on one day. 25,000 volunteer book lovers will go out into 6,000 communities to primarily seek out those without the means or access to printed books. World Book Night USA takes place on April 23, 2014 – Shakespeare’s birthday – and is in its third year in the U.S., after the UK launch in 2011. For more information (and to sign up for WBN mailings), go to: It is too late to sign up to participate in WBN 2014 but all are invited to attend this Kickoff event.
