JAY RUBIN
Wednesday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m.

Acclaimed translator of Japanese literature Jay Rubin is recently returned to live in the Seattle area. A professor, variously, at the University of Washington and Harvard, he is most known and read now for his translations of Haruki Murakami's work, including The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Norwegian Wood, and after the quake. His translation of Murakami's forthcoming novel, After Dark (Knopf), is due in May (and will, we hope be the occasion for another evening here). This evening's talk will include Murakami, but will also focus on Jay Rubin's recent translation of Ryunosuke Akutagawa's classic Rashomon and 17 Other Stories (Penguin), recently made available in a handsome edition, with an introduction by Mr. Murakami. Jay Rubin has also translated writing by Soseki Natsume and is the author of Haruki Murakami and the Music of Words.
