His books have covered much terrain, but his most recent—Dark Midnight When I Rise: The Story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers and River Run Red: The Fort Pillow Massacre in the American Civil War—have focused on aspects of U.S. history. He is at the new Northwest African American Museum tonight with his newest, The Slaves' War: The Civil War in the Words of Former Slaves (Houghton Mifflin).
