Each month, the Elliott Bay Fiction Book Club reads and discusses the best in contemporary fiction with the occasional classic thrown in for good measure. Our first selection of the new year is Cormac McCarthy's The Orchard Keeper Set in a remote rural Tennessee community in the years between the world wars, The Orchard Keeper tells of a young boy, John Wesley Rattner, and Marion Sylder, an outlaw and bootlegger who unbeknownst to either of them has killed the boy's father. Together with Rattner's Uncle Ather, whose communion with nature and stoic independence belong to a former age, they enact a drama that seems born of the lad itself. "The feeling for the land and seasons is so intense as to be part of the story and there are scenes one will never forget." - Harpers. Please join us.
